There are many types of Displays available for prototype development purposes, viz., simple indicator LED, LED Matrix, FND or 7 Segment LED, LCD, Touch Screens etc. For robust and simple displays known in prototype development industry are FNDs or 7 Segment LED. They are used in Industrial display boards [such as inside Motor RPM Indicator board or Packer Machine status display boards], in home gadgets such as in microwave ovens, calculators or in laboratory instruments.
The 7 Segment LED is constructed by seven LEDs and displays 0 to 9 and some alphanumeric characters. Depend upon the common point use, 7 Segment LED is either Common Cathode or Common Anode Type. They are available in single digit or in package such as of 2 or 4 digits.
Objective: Constructing a prototype using Arduino board to display data on 4 digit 7 Segment Display modules. Note that the data comes from Arduino board itself, which means data is generated by memory resident program of microcontroller chip. This system can be used as add-on module with any bigger system or prototype board where data is available from other sensors or sources.
This add-on module for any system is constructed using Arduino Board, 4-digit FND or 7 Segment LED, FND driver and power supply unit. The constructor can program a simple counter or random data generator program to show how display works.
The constructer can learn how to use FND/7 Segment LED with any microcontroller, software form interfacing technic to show data on it.
The FND type identification is important before designing/constructing this prototype. Since pins are very delicate care should be taken before soldering the 7 Segment LEDs.
Applications:
¾ Laboratory Instruments, Microwave Ovens, Calculators, Indicator Boards etc.
