Review: Automation System With Remote Control Facility

GSM is the buzz word, while designing any automation system for study purpose. Automation of Home/Work place is common using long range communication technology, called GSM. The House gadgets in physically challenged/elder resident houses or machines in the hazardous areas or control restricted area gadgets are needed as and when emergency situation arises. The GSM enabled Microcontroller System can be used as remote control device and control any hazardous or timely critical gadgets by standing at safe and comfortable place.

Objective: The construction of system allows user to control gadgets at home/work place/industry standing at safe and comfortable place. Note that getting current status of the controlling gadget is also implemented at both ends: remote end and gadget end. 

The system has two parts: Remote User End and Gadget end. At remote end user sends control command using GSM hand set in the form of SMS [Short Message Service]. At Gadget end such command SMS is received on Serial Port connected Communication Module and interpreted accordingly with the help of memory resident program of Controller Module. Next the decoded command is executed by sending active/not-active signal to output port connected Load Controller Module. Then same signal is sent to remote end user and local PC/ computer as acknowledgement or current gadget status signal.

The construction of system teaches user Communication Module interface, reading SMS commands using Microcontroller code, Load controlling technique, driving LCD display, feedback technique etc.

Currently the system controls gadget using On/Off actions, and can be modified to control speed or variation in the gadgets [fan, motor, light intensity etc.,] by slightly altering code and hardware.

IVRS or Interactive Voice Response System can be implemented at gadget end so that voice form status can be heard.

Note that GSM network is needed to operate, even though it is omnipresence is the drawback of the system.

Since only three/four different modules are controlled, less care needed while designing and controlling system.

Applications & Features:

The system is used as wireless remote control system at home/industry/work-place.
Since single point control is possible, useful for non-technical [children/elder/physically challenged] people.
Since system is embedded type and wireless, portability is done very easily. Changing controlled gadgets is very easy.
Application areas: Home, Industry, work-place or office gadgets, defense’s restricted zone gadgets etc.
